I hope my husband isn't reading this blog today. What are the chances? If you know him keep it a secret pretty please. This is pretty much my little vday gesture for him.
I made
homemade skor bar.Adapted from this recipe on health on the run, these are actually simple to make and will impress your honey if you want a last minute DIY valentines day gift. All you need is brown sugar, butter, crackers and semi sweet chocolate. For the full recipe click "
read more" below.
I used some of their suggested toppings, pecans, butterscotch chips and coconut.
After the chocolate has been cooled, break the pieces, arrange neatly and wrap in foil for a rustic packaging look. Fold the sides in neatly.
Download this label (don't worry it is not too heartsy or pink) and wrap it around your foil package. Stick it in your honey's lunch bag for an amazing mid-day treat. They'll come home in a good mood and maybe even save you a piece.
If your not sick of eating all the pieces that "broke".
Oh! And add a personal handwritten note. If you want.
This past weekend was the
gift fair I participated in. This year I decided to do
sugar cookies. They make great kris kringle gifts and stocking stuffers. I did a gold and white scheme throughout.
The lighting was pretty terrible but here is my table:
Of course cupcakes were there. Chocolate, peppermint and marble were thrown into the mix, plus I did some coconut flavours (because white went with my theme).
My personal favourite was the box of snowy tree cookies:
Above were the sugar cookies. I made
holiday tags for the individual packages and as a treat for you here they are for download. These can be used on those last minute gifts I know you are all scrambling to purchase. You're not alone.

I work for a large publishing company with many magazines under their belt. Some that have been around for ages. You wouldn't believe some of the stuff in our photo archives. I have sketches from illustrators when computers were not around, and recently came across these photos of old candy shops I thought were interesting enough to share with you:
39 cents a pound for these swiss chocolates...
Check out Neilson's rosebuds! Are those still around?...
Home made butter squares sound delicious...
LOVE this packaging for Kleenex. They should bring them back. The design would still be relevant. They look art deco...
And old packaging of candy bars they should bring back too...
Proof that bags of candies WERE only 10 cents...
A dump truck theme invitation I designed for birthday boy Owen:
If your having a truck themed birthday this is a
cool cake idea.
Letterpress invitations can be costly but are so beautiful. Letterpress printing is a traditional type of printing where text is created on a plate, reversed and raised, then literally inked and pressed into a sheet of paper.
Did I lose you?
Anyway It is pretty common and trendy for wedding invites. You should look into it.
Here is a baby shower invite I designed and printed on letterpress...
A bridal shower...
With my camera (or maybe just the lack of real photographer skill) you can't tell too much in these photos how the type is pressed on. Here is a good zoomed in shot to see the effect:
I wish I remembered my first birthday. Moms go all out for you, friends you didn't even know you had are there, you get good gifts, good food, games, loot bags, the works. My friend's son just turned the big one last week and she threw him the cutest golf-themed birthday brunch at
Tangle Creek Golf and Country Club. He wore the cutest golf outfit.
I designed the invitation and brought the theme through the tags and the cake.
(
contact me for custom designed invitations!) My friend Nadia and I spent a day baking and icing the sugar cookie favours.
The cake was banana flavour. I wanted to do a carved-type of cake resembling a golf course but also have a tier, below was my way to incorporate both. The sand dune was crushed ginger spice cookies. The evergreen trees and golf ball were both made out of fondant. The flag pole was a shish kabob stick painted with food colouring. The top of the flag was 'glued' on with royal icing.
This is the first cake Liam got to try. And by the looks of it not the last.
Happy birthday buddy.
